How do I know if I need to change my Medicare plan when I move?

Medicare Part A, Medicare Part B and some Medigap plans will move with you anywhere in the United States. However, it is important to investigate whether your Medicare Advantage or Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage will be available in your new community. Coverage areas vary not only by state, but also by zip code.

At no charge to you, an Advocate agent would be happy to check whether your current coverage will move with you, and if not, compare alternative plans that meet your unique needs and wants.

When can I change plans?

You can take advantage of this special enrollment period (SEP) any time of year if:

  • You move to a new address that isn't in your plan's service area.
  • You move to a new address that's still in your plan's service area, but you have new plan options in your new location.
  • You move back to the U.S after living outside the country.
  • You move into, currently live in, or move out of an institution (like a skilled nursing facility or long-term care hospital).
  • You are released from jail.
How much time do I have to make a change?

You can complete an application to change your Medicare plan during a three-month window which begins one month prior to your move and ends two months after your move.
